This is a unique and very SENIOR opportunity for a HEAD OF DATA SCIENCE to own and lead all DATA and ANALYTICS activities for a hugely progressive, International DIGITAL RETAIL BANK.

Based in JOHANNESBURG this HEAD OF DATA SCIENCE role offers a salary of R2.4 Million – R2.6 Million/annum.

This is one of the most innovative international RETAIL BANKS who have driven DIGITAL BANKING practices and the associated DATA SCIENCE capabilities – this Bank does not have any physical bank branches and are one of the first banks to put its core-banking platform in the cloud. 
The majority of their systems are AWS cloud applications that provide system scalability, uniform security and cost efficiencies. Their use of technology is ground-breaking as is their Data Acquisition Capabilities, which means Data Science within this business is hugely influential.  

As HEAD OF DATA SCIENCE, you’ll LEAD ALL OF THE DATA AND ANALYTICS ACTIVITIES for the bank. They’re building next generation information and analytics capabilities and leveraging alternative data sources to secure and enhance the financial wellbeing of customers and communities.
Your efforts will enable financial inclusion for everyday people and small businesses in South Africa, creating a positive difference in their lives and tangibly increasing the prosperity of local communities.
As HEAD OF DATA SCIENCE, you will lead a team accountable for advanced analytical solution design and deployment for business along with a group data science centre. The team currently consist of 12 people.

RESPONSIBILITIES include (but not limited to):
Business Leadership:  
Provide a centralised data and analytics service, from reporting to insights to machine learning to AI, to the bank, spanning Risk, Credit, Finance, Marketing, Operations and Strategy. Assist business, marketing and risk colleagues in the development of decisioning rules/strategies utilising the insights, attributes and models created.  Manage deployment of sophisticated models and strategies in live operating environments in collaboration with business, risk, enterprise services and other stakeholders within the bank.  Design and implement modelling and analytics on large and complex data sets. Develop and plan required analytic projects in response to business needs.  Lead/participate in negotiations to source data from vendors and business partners.  Contribute to the development of data models for analytics, modelling architectures, modelling standards, reporting, and data analysis methodologies.
People Leadership:  
Inspiring others and set the tone for an inclusive and high-performance team.  Motivating and challenging your team to meet and exceed performance standards through continuous improvement and driving results.  Coaching, mentoring, managing performance, training and development of people.

Background in modelling and analytics with a leading information-based company.
Experience in small business or consumer risk or marketing, especially scoring and forecasting models, is particularly useful.
Strong understanding of predictive / analytical modelling techniques, theories, principles, and
Strong hands-on knowledge of data mining / predictive modelling tools such as R, SAS, Python, etc.
Strong familiarity and experience with data preparation and processing - such as assessment of data quality, new variable creation, variable selection, etc.

PhD/Post Doc in any field with advanced quantitative focus or Masters or Bachelors degree with high distinction in modelling oriented discipline including but not limited to Statistics, Mathematics, physics, Chemistry, Biology, Econometrics, Engineering, etc.
